Fleeting Moments

So when I first signed up for blogging, it put me on the spot to come up with a name. I wasn't prepared to come up with something relevant, so I went with Kat's Vent then changed it to Kat's Rants (much better I know :-0 ) Anyway, the more I thought about it the more I disliked it. I don't want to be venting or ranting, there's enough of that already. So it is time for a change. I came across this quote from another blog and fell in love with it. It came from a conference talk called “Daughters of God” , by Elder Ballard. He quotes author Anna Quinlen who reminds us not to rush past the fleeting moments. She said:

“The biggest mistake I made [as a parent] is the one that most of us make. . . . I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of [my three children] sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages six, four, and one. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less.”

That's my new resolve, especially now that I don't get to spend as much time with my family as I did before, I want to make sure I capture those fleeting moments, moments I'll never get back.

I Need A Trapper Keeper!

Remember those from the days. I know that will age me. So I'm going back to school. After 13 years off I decided it was time to go and finish my degree. But instead of feeling excited to go back and accomplish this goal that I have had since I was young, I am hitting my head on the wall saying "What am I thinking?!" Life is good. All my kids are now in school, I'm learning to be a better cook, I'm learning how to knit hats, this is what moms are suppose to do, not doing my own homework along side her kids. On top of that I decided to go into Construction Management (yeah, you heard me) again with the head banging.
So I am trying to get organized (thus the need for the trapper keeper), I'm taking 5 classes plus a lab with one of those. My lab is Surveying of all things. Let me share a problem out of my new textbooks:

What?!?!?!
I was going to show a different problem but my keyboard didn't have all the different symbols.
I honsestly think I could learn a foreign language quicker than I am going to understand this class. Me and math are like oil and water, we just don't like each other.
Oh well, all is good, I'm just looking for a passing grade, gone are the days I cared about good grades now I just want one that won't make me repeat the class. Too bad I don't get the new school clothes tradition, I'm sure that would make me feel better :-)

Hats and Pants

So for those that really know me, know that I am not very domesticated, so you will all be surprised to know I learned how to knit. Well, not really, but close. I went to an enrichment activity where they were doing these little knit hats for shelters using these looms ( I think that's what they are) anyway, I tried one, and now I am hooked, literally. Since Wednesday when I first learned, I have made 4 hats and half way through another one. Are you impressed? My mom was, she said I thought I would never see you knit. Life is full of surprises.

I showed Kaleb's first day of school pics and talked about how my baby is growing up, well he came home from school on Thursday wearing pants I didn't send him to school with, apparently this school has a no shorts policy (that's all we bought him for school clothes) any way the pants they sent him home with were size 4t and they were too big, they had to tie them up in the back and they were still too loose. So we went and bought him some 3t pants and still had to tighten the insides. So my little boy may be growing up, but he's not getting very big yet. He may never play professional basketball but we are still holding out for gymnastics.

First Day of School

So my baby started kindergarten today. It's hard to believe Kaleb is 5 and going to school. Both Kaleb and I have been very excited for this day! When he got home David called him to see how his first day was, this is how their conversation went:

David: What did you do today?

Kaleb: I learned something.

David: What did you learn?

Kaleb: I forgot. But I got two F's and the rest were A's.

Sounds like a rough class when you can get 2 F's on your first day. He cracks us up. He can tell the craziest stories. He makes a good Gardner because he doesn't hesitate at all when he's feeding you a good story.

The other day Kaleb and I were talking about how you should follow the prophet, and he said "Yea, not the other guy, not Plankton" I said, "you mean, Satan?", he said that Plankton was Satan's nickname. He sure thinks fast but he keeps us smiling.

SURVIVOR

That's what I am, a survivor. I survived a teenage "Survivor" party we had for my teenage girls and 15 of their friends. I learned that 2 1/2 hours is too long to keep teenagers occupied, we did it, but barely. It was a back to school party, but I forgot to say that on the invitations and four of their friends showed up with birthday presents (their birthday was in March :-) lol) Anyway, it was a lot of fun. We had two tribes, Tribe Akalei (That's Ashley in Hawaiian) and Tribe Koukonei (Courtney). We had them digging through dirt with their mouths to find worms (cookie crumbs and gummy worms) we blindfolded them before we gave them their bowls to let their imaginations run wild. We had whip cream fights, gummy rats and tug of war and a whole lot of other games. The girls really enjoyed it so I guess it was all worth it in the end.
